Highly Efficient Precision Velocity and Ranging Algorithm for FMCW Sensors

Whether it’s Radar, LiDAR, or Sonar, if an FMCW sensor is required to measure velocity, it’s probably going to use some form of the ubiquitous 2D FFT Doppler measurement algorithm. This algorithm is well understood and is considered quite dependable, but it is extremely resource inefficient, and its limits can be painful to the system designer. Sometimes these limits can be dangerous, like the inability to measure velocities above an undesirably low ambiguous limit. This limitation can render a key sensor blind. Aeres EM has developed an alternative non-Doppler velocity and ranging algorithm that can measure velocity and range very accurately, with a minimum chirp count. Millimeter range accuracy is now achievable with very low bandwidths such as 250 MHz. More importantly, very accurate velocities combined with millimeter resolution and no effective unambiguous velocity limits are also possible. These very important improvements also free up valuable acquisition, processing, and memory resources, allowing the manufacturer to provide next generation sensor performance with only a firmware upgrade.
