While Ethernet based IP cameras have been hugely successful in enterprise and consumer applications over the past two decades, the same has not happened yet in the car. This is largely due to the lack of automotive multi-giga bit Ethernet link needed to move uncompressed video data as opposed to the tens of megabit bandwidth needed to move compressed data in consumer IPC.
In this paper, we will present a chipset compatible with the latest IEEE 802.3ch 10GBT-1 standards for the physical interface to support a complete Ethernet based sensor networking system. It further uses IEEE 1722 for layer 2 protocol. The PHYs support STP as well as coaxial cable for low-cost Power over Cable (PoC) implementation and uses Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) mode for low-power asymmetric operation in typical sensor applications.
