The advent of Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs) necessitates a radical transformation of Electronic/Electrical (E/E) architectures. This presentation explores the evolution from a plethora of small Electronic Control Units (ECUs) towards a more consolidated approach with large domain controllers. Through teardowns of representative domain controllers, we analyze the impact of this shift on the Bill of Materials (BOM), highlighting trends in component selection and integration. Furthermore, we explore the potential of chiplet technology to address the increasing computational demands. Chiplets, by enabling modular and heterogeneous integration of specialized processing units, offer several advantages, including improved performance, reduced development time, enhanced flexibility, and the potential for faster innovation. Finally, we explore the challenges associated with the adoption of chiplets in the automotive industry.
