Introduction of novel ADAS sensor architecture with clear goal to improve ultrasonic sensing performance and provide car with 360deg audio spectrum perception in form of cost-efficient multipurpose sensor: voice control, noise cancelation, road condition detection, emergency vehicle detection, detection of approaching vehicles, 4D ultrasound, predictive maintenance, secure near range communication. Clearly, ultrasonic technology is advancing, and new applications are emerging. For example, work is being done to co-locate a MEMS microphone with the ultrasonic sensor to be able to calculate 4D point could, widen sensor viewing angle (reduce number of sensors per bumper), improve maximum and minimum measurable distance.  As well as receiving the ultrasonic echo signal, the MEMS microphone can pick up other audible sounds – such as that of an approaching vehicle, car sounds which may indicate potential defects (predictive maintenance) or sense road conditions (road wetness sensor) . It would also be able to sense the siren of an emergency vehicles and alerting the driver to take appropriate action. Combination of piezo and MEMS in single sensor also allowing low power, secure near rage communication in ultrasonic spectrum (18kHz to 22kHz) between car and smart phones.
