Driving Well-Being: Biosensing for the Smart Cockpit

As modern vehicles evolve into intelligent, user adaptive environments, the ability to sense and interpret occupant physiology has become increasingly critical for safety, comfort, and personalized mobility experiences. This work presents Mitsubishi Electric Mobility’s infrared based, non contact biosensing platform, designed as a software only enhancement to existing Driver Monitoring System (DMS) hardware. The system extracts vital physiological signals—heart rate, heart rate variability, respiration rate, stress, alcohol intoxication indicators, and abnormal conditions—using luminance based remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) techniques optimized for real world in cabin conditions.

We describe the sensing methodology, multimodal signal processing pipeline, and hardware agnostic integration strategy that enables continuous and robust measurement without dedicated sensors or wearables. A capability roadmap and supported sensor placements demonstrate scalability across market segments and vehicle architectures. Application domains include proactive safety intervention, health risk detection, personalized comfort automation, and user experience analytics. By transforming conventional in cabin monitoring systems from reactive observers to predictive, human aware platforms, this biosensing technology provides a practical pathway for OEMs to meet emerging regulatory requirements, deliver differentiated customer experiences, and unlock new value added services. The results highlight how software driven biometrics can meaningfully enhance occupant well being and vehicle intelligence at production scale.
