Sensor availability is key for ensuring safe operation of Automated Driving Systems (ADS) particularly for L3 and beyond. Methodologies used by L1/L2 vehicles do not scale well with the proliferation of sensors in L3-L5 vehicles. Attempts to address shortcomings has led to novel cleaning technology. Regardless of the cleaning technology used a common problem is now affecting the industry at large – how to determine cleaning efficacy? In this talk TTP will describe the challenge and lay out practical methods for evaluating sensor cleaning for cameras and lidars, that TTP believes could lead to standardisation. Focus will be given to optical quality measurements, the impact of standard versus non-standard test patterns and more novel techniques. Standardisation will allow OEMs to compare across technologies and give tier-1s/2s a fair marker to work towards. TTP will use the case study of novel ultrasonic cleaning technology developed internally to demonstrate the idea.
