Glass as an enabler to automotive market success for LiDAR sensors

Event: AutoSens Brussels
| Published: September 2020
While leading tech partners focus on bringing LiDAR sensor technology to its highest standards, others like Wideye aim at providing safe and seamless integration solution in automotive and other environments. Live demonstrations of AGC windshield technology from its Wideye task force have helped change the industry’s perceptions of LiDAR. This automotive-grade glass with 0% IR absorption provides LiDAR with a strong protection to dust, dirt, and other environmental harms. Unlike other transparent materials, glass boasts a high light transmission and is durable: it is highly resistant to scratching, impact, aging, chemicals, color distortion by UV radiation, etc. Furthermore, glass easily lends itself to different treatments such as heating (for de-icing/defrosting), hydrophobic coating (for freedom from water droplets), etc. By using existing high-mounted glass surface (windshield, back and sidelites, sunroofs), or by developing new ones, those integration positions will provide the safest unobstructed views where LiDAR can truly play the role of human eyes”only better. Providing safest visibility to LiDAR, while integrating seamlessly into the vehicle’s body is our quest to reconcile the dreams of engineers and vehicle stylists alike.
