The current focus in DMS is largely around visual distraction. However, mental distraction is also a very important factor to consider for safety. The goal of this presentation is to introduce the audience to the value of detecting the mental state of the driver. Driver’s level of attention to the road can be gleaned from their mental state. It is possible for the driver to not appear visually distracted (eyes are on the road) but could be mentally distracted. In the presentation, we will demonstrate the impact of mental distraction on driving behavior. Driving behavior is measured through several driving performance behaviors and metrics.
