At present little or no attention is given to the objective statistical performance of images being used to train to neural networks and the potential penalties of getting this wrong in automotive vision applications are substantial. This work details the first stages in the application and simulation of detection theory as developed for medical and radar systems to cameras intended for autonomous driving. Good correlation is found across image size, contrast and illumination for simple simulated targets.
