This presentation explores advancements in the management of safety risks associated with non-transient impairment. A particular emphasis is on Euro NCAP 2026’s expanded scope to include ‘non-fatigue’ impairment alongside traditional fatigue-related factors. A key industry focus is the identification of alcohol intoxication, driven by its significant contribution to road trauma and the increasing regulatory attention in regions such as the United States. The presentation will detail a comprehensive strategy to address diverse impairments—including alcohol, other drugs, and heightened emotional states—through innovative research and development efforts. Initially focussing on the real-time detection capabilities, an human-machine interface (HMI) concept will be introduced that balances safety with user acceptance. Through presentation of a roadmap for non-transient impairment, this work aims to guide industry stakeholders in addressing evolving safety risks using advanced interior sensing solutions, ultimately contributing to safer roads.
