Sensing in adverse weather conditions

Event: AutoSens Brussels
, 2020
What happens to self-driving cars if the weather turns bad?Current systems for Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS), collaborative, and Automated Driving (AD) offer comfort and safety in good weather. However, they often fail to sense their surroundings in visibility conditions with heavy rain, snow or fog causing the automated systems to stop their support. Now that we are progressing towards automated driving the requirements of fully reliable environment perception are only accentuated. The DENSE project addressed this key challenge by developing an environment perception technology that extends the performance of sensors in adverse visibility conditions. The project designed, tested and validated an affordable sensor suite that extended the ability of such sensing systems to operate also in adverse weather.
