Automotive cameras are vital for advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), and their performance relies on precise calibration. We present Bosch’s laser-based solution for efficient and robust automotive camera calibration. While various calibration methods exist, comparing their performance is complex due to differing parameter sets and calibration models.

To address this, Bosch employs a comprehensive validation methodology, using a triangulation method analogous to IEEE P2020, focusing on overall performance rather than specific parameter values. Results from Backward Projection testing on cameras with a 120° FoV showed exceptional accuracy, with deviations averaging only 0.026%. This high precision translates to improved object detection, distance estimation, and free-space detection, enhancing critical ADAS functions like AEB and ACC. Furthermore, the increased accuracy can reduce camera costs by improving tolerance to parameter drift over time.
