In May 2024, Ford recalled over 100,000 vehicles due to Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) affecting rearview camera systems. According to NHTSA, EMI from customer mobile phones disrupted the Accessory Protocol Image Module (APIM), causing the camera image to flicker or shake. This incident highlights the increasing impact of EMI, which the auto industry still struggles to manage—despite significant investment in testing. How can EMI issues persist, and could such interference cause more serious problems in next-gen ADAS systems?
One reason is the gap in standard testing methods. CISPR and ISO standards often don’t reflect real-world cable configurations. As a result, many OEMs have created more rigorous internal testing for EMC. In this presentation, I’ll examine the limitations of standard EMI testing and explore enhanced methods used by leading OEMs. I’ll also compare SerDes benchmarks, including MIPI A-PHY and ASA Motion-Link, across metrics like AWGN, TOL, Crosstalk, and NBI.”
