The transition to Software Defined Vehicles, driven by ADAS and AV technologies, is reshaping automotive E/E architectures toward centralized, high-performance computing platforms. This evolution demands software stacks that not only deliver deterministic real-time performance but also embed safety and security by design. This presentation promotes microkernel-based architecture as the foundational layer for ADAS/AV systems. It gives comparison between microkernel and monolithic designs, emphasizing the former’s modularity, fault isolation, and reduced attack surface. These properties enhance system robustness and facilitate compliance with functional safety (ISO 26262) and cybersecurity (ISO/SAE 21434) standards. Leveraging open standards for abstraction layers further promotes hardware/software decoupling, enabling cross-platform portability and reducing integration complexity. Furthermore, by adding supports for virtualization and containerization, it allows scalable deployment and cloud integration. This positions microkernel-based systems as a future-proof solution for building safe, secure, maintainable, and interoperable ADAS and AD software platforms.
