Mercedes recently dropped their L3 series ALKS in favor of L2++ and a research project for L4. Waymo is scaling L4 to more cities, and yet it still takes months to years for every new city in the US, let alone on another continent. The fundamental challenge both approaches share: understanding and quantifying the link between mass production tolerances of the sensors and AI-based computer vision performance.
