Why Your Perception System Depends on 50-Year-Old Road Standards

USA

Tutorial

Have you ever wondered why a red traffic light or yellow road marking must have a given CIE Lab value? Or why an observation angle of 2,29° is used to assess road marking performances?
What is the common denominator of these requirements?

All answers led to technical reports and standards made by CIE, International Lighting Commissions. CIE and automotive industries share the same timeline: both were born early XX century. And since driving has been considered mainly a human activity of perceiving (visually) the road environment and acting accordingly, all regulatory requirements related to road environment are based on CIE reference conditions and observers.
The CIE metrics ensure that everything in the road environment (including road signs) is perceivable and recognizable by human drivers.

This short course will present the CIE reference documents, metrics, simplified assumptions and measurement methods on which regulations/standards are based. Additionally, the impact of CIE reference conditions used in road environment for performance evaluations will be discussed with the attendees to raise awareness on how everything in the road environment is designed exclusively for humans and how limiting this can be for sensors.
