China is rapidly shaping the future of automotive technology, with Hefei emerging as a key innovation hub. To launch AutoSens China 2024, we hosted an exclusive VIP site visit, bringing industry leaders and government representatives together to explore cutting-edge advancements.
From NIO’s battery-swapping technology to Volkswagen’s highly automated production lines, the visit highlighted China’s growing influence in global automotive innovation. With strong government support and a thriving ecosystem, the country is set to lead the next era of mobility. As we look ahead to AutoSens China 2025, we remain committed to fostering collaboration and innovation in this dynamic industry.
Showcasing Innovation and Collaboration in Hefei
In a departure from the traditional expert tutorials that have found success in Europe and the USA, we opted for a VIP site visit to kick off the inaugral AutoSens China in 2024. This format aims to engage CEOs, CTOs, and Government representatives by highlighting what sets AutoSens apart from other exhibitions: a focus on creating an event “for engineers, by engineers.” This initiative reflects the unique characteristics of the Chinese market and its burgeoning automotive technology sector.
Exploring Hefei’s Innovation Landscape
The day began at the Grand Union of Innovation (GUI), a forward-thinking initiative to create an “innovation valley.” This project blends scientific, industrial, and institutional excellence to foster an inclusive ecosystem of creativity and entrepreneurship. By welcoming top global talents and resources, GUI aims to solidify Hefei’s position as a leading automotive hub. Attendees witnessed groundbreaking advancements in both semiconductor and imaging technologies, and were briefed on the ambitious plans to further develop Hefei’s role in the global automotive landscape.
A Visit to NIO’s Cutting-Edge Facility
The VIP delegation next visited NIO’s state-of-the-art body shop, a 64,800 m² facility dedicated to producing steel and aluminum hybrid vehicle bodies. With 744 robots and a remarkable automation rate of 97.5%, this facility demonstrated NIO’s commitment to efficiency and innovation.
As we walked onto the floor, eyes were first drawn to an aluminum chassis hanging overhead. Our gracious host explained that this innovative approach reduces vehicle weight by 30% without compromising safety—a critical advancement for EVs in particular, as battery weight is so heavy. Utilizing aerospace-level technology, the facility employs innovative techniques such as pressing joins together like Lego blocks to enhance reliability. This decreases the possibility of joint failure, an important safety feature. Further along the floor we witnessed vehicles coming together, with individuals making adjustments to vehicles that passed overhead. NIO’s production lines accommodate unique customer specifications, including tires from different manufacturers and personalised interiors. This streamlined process results in a turnaround time of just 2-3 weeks, compared to competitors like BMW, which require 3-6 months for similar levels of customisation. But perhaps the most impressive portion of the tour was witnessing first hand NIO’s pioneering battery-swapping system, which allows EV drivers to replace depleted batteries in about four minutes, with aspirations to reduce this time further to under two minutes. The ground underneath the vehicle opens up, with a system raising up to remove the battery, which is taken out of site to be charged for another user. A fresh battery then raises from the floor and is connected to the vehicle robotically, and the driver can continue with their journey. This technology exemplifies NIO’s innovative approach to addressing common EV challenges.
Building Connections at VCTC
The visit concluded at the Volkswagen China Technical Center (VCTC), a facility showcasing cutting-edge automation and engineering. The center operates with over 96% automation, featuring areas where just one or two personnel oversee operations. Among its technological marvels is the Titan robot, capable of lifting vehicles weighing up to 1,000 kilograms and seamlessly delivering them to six specialized robots for underbody assembly. With 71 HAVS feeding production lines, the site is futuristic in appearance, with small robots roaming around the visitors’ feet assisting the facility to achieve an impressive output of two vehicle bodies per minute and completes 30 cars daily. Notably, all components and technologies are sourced within China, underscoring the country’s growing self-reliance in automotive manufacturing.
In an interview with Juergen Hoellisch, an advisory board member for AutoSens, he outlined the importance of fostering global connections: “The world is becoming smaller and smaller, and the people are getting closer and closer. It’s about learning from each other and innovating together,” he noted. Juergen expressed his hope that the event would break cultural barriers and encourage meaningful networking, as attendees from different backgrounds began engaging and collaborating over the course of the day.
Local Government Support
To cap off this exciting and informative day, Sense Media had the pleasure of hosting our VIP guests from local OEM and Tier 1s alongside a delegation of Government Officials for dinner. After some brief speeches and a short video presentation highlighting the current contributions and future potential of Hefei within the global automotive industry, our guests were able to experience local cuisine. We were honoured to have the support of the local Government for this important milestone in AutoSens’ history.
Moving Forward
AutoSens’ VIP site visit in Hefei successfully demonstrated the region’s potential as a global automotive innovation hub. By fostering collaboration between industry leaders and showcasing groundbreaking technologies, the event reaffirmed AutoSens’ mission to inspire and connect the global engineering community. Looking ahead to 2025, the goal is to double the size of the event bringing InCabin to China for the first time, further solidifying our presence in China and continuing to build a thriving, innovative community.
