World-leading vehicle perception conference, AutoSens announces highly anticipated technical agenda ahead of September event

Jun 20, 2018AutoSensLatest News

AutoSens returns once again to the spectacular AutoWorld Museum in Brussels, Belgium this Autumn from 17-20 September. The speaker line-up and full conference agenda for its European event has just been revealed.

The challenge of the automotive industry is to design computers and robots that can perform tasks better than humans can, while also causing minimal disruption to a system that will include human driven vehicles for many decades to come. “It’s no easy task,” says AutoSens founder Robert Stead, “after all, many humans find driving a significant challenge.”

The AutoSens programme prides itself on its founding principles of technical integrity and no sales slides, with the concept of ‘vehicle perception’ at the core of the event. The main conference topics ensure the programme gets right to the heart of the challenges facing vision system engineers of today and tomorrow. With content geared to provide insight, generate lively discussion, and propose solutions for shared challenges in ADAS and semi-autonomous vehicle technologies.

With over 60 sessions taking place in Brussels, attendees will have ample opportunity to hear valuable technical content. Themes running throughout the conference include:

  • Developments in sensor technologies, including camera monitoring systems, LIDAR, radar, and time-of-flight imaging
  • Sensor fusion, including validation challenges and discussion of different combinations of sensors
  • Functional safety and testing, including real world versus virtual validation
  • Driver and compartment monitoring on the way towards autonomous vehicles
  • Image quality and standardisation
  • How to improve the performance and safety of automated vehicles
  • Image and signal processing requirements
  • How computer vision affects camera design and SOC design
  • Incorporating AI and deep learning into embedded systems
  • Regulation/ethics considerations for self-driving vehicles
  • Human factors in sensor and autonomous vehicle design
  • Mapping and localisation for driverless vehicles

Highlights of the agenda include keynotes from Professor Christoph Stiller, KIT, on Solutions and Open Challenges in Vehicular Perception, Professor Michael Watts, MIT, with a review of the latest research in photonics-sensor technologies in automotive and Jack Weast, Intel, sharing an Open, Transparent, Industry-Driven Approach to AV Safety.

Expert speakers on the 3-track conference agenda represent organisations from across the automotive landscape, including BMW Group, Intel, Hailo, Lyft, NXP Semiconductors, Waymo, University of Surrey, Siemens, Renesas, Smart Eye, The University of Warwick, ABI Research, VSI Labs and Arbe Robotics. Session leaders are all experts in robotics, computer vision, automotive electronics, digital imaging, functional safety and more, all have been invited specifically because of their vast experience, recent projects, and ability to shape the future of ADAS and autonomous vehicle technology. Before cars can be connected, engineers must first connect. Each AutoSens event is a week of discussions, collaborations, debates, business meetings, interactive learning and technology showcasing. “AutoSens brings together engineering minds in a way incomparable with other events this this sector. A real sense of community is what makes it tick, and we’re incredibly excited to see it grow to such stature in only the 5th edition of the event,” summarises Stead, who is also the Chair of the IEEE Standards Association P2020 working group on automotive camera image quality.
